Getting Ready to Begin

Your preparation checklist for mastering color theory in web design. Take time to review these requirements before starting your learning experience.

Essential Prerequisites

  • Basic HTML & CSS Knowledge
You should understand HTML structure and be comfortable with CSS selectors, properties, and basic styling concepts. We'll build on these fundamentals when applying color theory.
  • Design Software Access
Have at least one design tool available - this could be Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Canva, or even free alternatives like GIMP. You'll use these for color palette exercises.
  • Code Editor Setup
Install a modern code editor like VS Code, Sublime Text, or Atom with syntax highlighting. This helps when implementing color schemes in your CSS.
  • Browser Developer Tools
Familiarize yourself with inspecting elements and modifying CSS in Chrome DevTools or Firefox Developer Tools. We'll use these extensively for color testing.

Technical Setup

  • Reliable Internet Connection
Ensure stable internet for streaming video content and accessing online color tools. Some exercises require real-time color picker tools and reference materials.
  • Multiple Browser Testing
Install Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (if on Mac) for cross-browser color testing. Different browsers can render colors slightly differently, especially older versions.
  • Color Calibrated Display
While not mandatory, consider calibrating your monitor or understanding its color limitations. This affects how you perceive the colors you're working with.

Learning Mindset

  • Time Commitment Understanding
Plan for 8-12 hours per week over 6 months. Color theory builds progressively, so consistent practice matters more than cramming sessions.
  • Portfolio Project Planning
Think about a personal or practice website where you can apply learned concepts. Having a real project makes the theory more meaningful and memorable.

Self-Assessment Questions

Technical Comfort

Can you create a basic webpage with styled elements? Do you understand how CSS properties work together? If you're still learning HTML/CSS fundamentals, consider taking a foundational course first.

Visual Awareness

Do you notice when websites have colors that work well together versus those that clash? This natural curiosity about visual design indicates you're ready to dive deeper into the theory behind color choices.

Learning Goals

Are you looking to improve existing design skills, start a career transition, or enhance your current web development work? Clear goals help you stay motivated through the more theoretical sections.
